How private language lessons work for adults

The first lesson is a check-up: your level, your goal and the time you have. The tutor then suggests a rhythm, often one or two hour-long sessions a week, and a programme to match: conversation, grammar, exam preparation or the vocabulary of your job.

Face to face, the tutor comes to you or you go to them. By video, you meet on a platform, with materials shared on screen and no travel. Either way, what makes you progress is regularity and speaking time: one-to-one, you talk far more than in a group.

Language lesson prices in England in 2026

A private tutor who comes to your home typically charges £25 to £45 an hour outside London, and £35 to £60 in London, depending on the language, experience and the level you aim for. A language school bills one-to-one lessons at around £40 to £70 an hour, but group classes cost much less.

Evening classes at colleges and council adult learning services usually cost £100 to £250 for a ten-week term. Online, rates start around £8 to £10 an hour and go up to £35, with a discounted first lesson.

Language school, local tutor or online platform: which one?

A language school gives structure: a placement test, a programme, evening classes, exam sessions. A local independent tutor follows your pace and may come to your home. An online platform offers the widest choice: native tutors for every language, very flexible hours, generally lower prices and the option to change tutor.

The three combine well: many adults take an intensive course at a school, then keep their level up with a tutor by video. Start from your goal, and pick the format that serves it.

Questions about learning a language as an adult

Do I need a certain level to take private language lessons?

No. Private lessons suit complete beginners too: the tutor starts from zero, explains in English when needed and moves at your pace. It is the most comfortable way to start a language without feeling lost in a group.

Are adult language classes free in England?

Most foreign language evening classes are fee-paying, although some councils offer concessions for people on benefits. ESOL courses in English can be fully funded for eligible residents. Ask your local college or adult learning service.

Are the schools listed on this site linked to the online tutor platform?

No. The listings come from open map data and are given for information only. The trial lesson buttons lead to an independent partner platform, with no link to the schools listed.

Want to speak a new language?

A private tutor by video, chosen from native or qualified teachers: a first lesson at a low price to check the method suits you, then sessions at times that fit your week, with no travel at all.
